Life in Italy
Small things, said slowly.
These everyday moments matter as much as the famous landmarks.

08:10
Coffee at the bar
You order at the counter and drink it standing. Sitting at a table costs more, and nobody minds you leaving after two minutes. A cappuccino after lunch is not illegal, just a little unusual.
Standing is cheaper than sitting.
13:00
Lunch closes things
Many offices, small shops and pharmacies close in the early afternoon. Plan errands for the morning and you will spend less time in queues.
Mornings are for paperwork.
18:40
The crowded train
Regional trains fill up at rush hour. Validate a paper ticket before you board, or tap a contactless card where it is accepted.
Validate paper tickets before boarding.
Saturday
The market
Neighbourhood markets sell fruit and vegetables for less than supermarkets. Go late and prices drop. Go often and people start to recognise you.
Bring your own bag.
Sunday
The slow day
Many shops close. Museums open. The first Sunday of the month, many state museums are free.
First Sundays: free state museums.

On the radio
Italian radio is a free language course. Put it on while you cook.
